Picasso Blue Period

Picasso had a Blue period and most if not all were of a gloomy nature"The Old Guitarist, c.1903" Print

This painting  The Old Guitarist was painted in 1903 was from a period when Picasso did not have much money.

Picasso

The Tragedy

This painting was also painted in 1903 it has a rather depressing feel and the family looks a bit lost somehow.

If You Go Down To the Wood Today

David Hockney was planning to go down to the woods and paint the trees, but in a two page spread that was in in The Guardian today was unable to as the owner had  chopped them all down.

I found that quite upsetting, to chop down trees, just like that , very sad as they spend years growing.

The Colour Blue

Why is it that the colour blue has a almost dual personality? “‘I am feelling Blue” comes to mind as a phrase, now where did that come from?
You have the blue sky and sunny weather which makes you feel better.
Blue is associated with the sea as well the distant view of mountains can be painted with blue with a touch of violet

The power of profound meaning is found in blue……Blue is the  typical heavenly  colour. The ultimate feeling it  creates is one of rest. When it sinks almost to black it echoes a griefthjat is hardly human.

(Kandinsky page 260,Bright Earth The invention Of Colour,by Phillip Ball published by Vintage Books London 2001)
